"Under surveillance, tourism, construction and medical services" - Tax Administration in action, control of high-risk sectors

The Tax Administration is deepening its drive to formalize the economy, focusing on sectors with a high risk of informality. Tourism, construction, and hydrocarbons have been at the center of controls over the past year, while authorities are reporting concrete results.
"We have continued with the work regarding the formalization of the sectors that we have identified as at risk. It has been the tourism sector, the construction sector, but also the hydrocarbons sector. And to be honest, these initiatives that we have had have yielded concrete results. So, the awareness of operators operating in these sectors and remote monitoring, the intersection of controls in the country, have yielded tangible results. The Director General of Taxation will provide some details regarding this, but what I want to emphasize is that as a result of the Tax Administration's approach, we have a significant increase in terms of personal income tax paid, or social and health insurance contributions.
We also have a significant decrease in the phenomenon of declaring minimum wages in these sectors, which in fact reflects a fairer reality in terms of the labor market. The next step will be to control the medical sector, but also the personal and aesthetic care sector. It is a sector that we have identified as high risk and will be the subject of the Tax Administration's work in the coming months."
Meanwhile, the Tax Administration is increasingly using advanced analytics to identify cases of income undeclaration, especially in the tourism sector but not only.
"Tourism Sector - The Tax Administration is analyzing data received from the Booking and Airbnb platforms. The results show that: Booking: Around 17,000 taxpayers with around 80 million euros in reservations. Airbnb: 8,500 taxpayers with 40 million euros in reservations. After the awareness phase, checks will be carried out to assess income that has not been declared correctly.
Medical and Personal Care Service Sector: An analysis of salaries has been conducted for about 10,000 taxpayers and about 45,000 employees. On April 1, the indicative salary list for this sector will be published. There will be preliminary notifications for taxpayers and checks for those who do not reflect these salaries.
Agricultural Products Trade Sector The focus has been on the main food markets of the country. The tax administration will be constantly present for information and control."
According to Binaj, the data shows a high volume of reservations on international platforms, while after the awareness phase, controls for the accurate declaration of income are expected to begin.
