Diseases of the circulatory system continue to be the leading cause of death in Albania. During 2025, they accounted for 52.9% of all deaths registered in the country, maintaining the same level as the previous year.

According to data published by INSTAT, 21,394 deaths were recorded last year, or 3.2% less compared to 2024. The crude mortality rate also fell to 910.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, from 929.8 a year earlier.

After circulatory diseases, the second most common cause of death was the group "symptoms, signs and ill-defined diseases", with 20.9% of the total, with the largest share of deaths from old age. In third place are tumors, which account for 15.3% of deaths.

The data also shows that 96.7% of deaths were due to natural causes. Meanwhile, accidents accounted for 2.2% of cases, marking a slight increase compared to 2024, while the share of homicides and suicides remained unchanged, at 0.2% and 0.9%, respectively.

INSTAT highlights that heart and blood vessel diseases are the leading cause of death for both men and women. On the other hand, tumors are more common in men, while old age-related deaths are more common in women.

Meanwhile, infant mortality remained unchanged compared to the previous year. In 2025, 106 infant deaths were recorded, with a rate of 4.7 deaths per 1,000 live births.
