Rivers could lose over 30% of their flow by 2050/ Climate change study: Situation expected to worsen

Rivers could lose over 30% of their flow by 2050/ Climate change study:

Albania is entering an era where the fight for water could become the biggest battle of the coming decades. Scientists' warnings are alarming: rivers are losing strength, the land is drying up, and ecosystems are heading towards a critical point.

The latest studies show that by 2050, the minimum flows of rivers such as the Vjosa and Shushica could fall by over 30%. This means less water for nature, for agriculture and for the life that depends on these rivers. As temperatures rise and precipitation changes, droughts are expected to become longer and more aggressive. This study has used for the first time in the Vjosa basin, the Erosion Potential Method (EPM) to assess the impact of climate change on land degradation.

The results show that under both climate scenarios, increased erosion and sediment transport are projected to occur, increasing the risk of erosion and sediment transport in rivers. This process could affect water flows, agricultural productivity, and flood risk.

Experts warn that if more than 30% of the natural flow is missing, the ecosystem enters the danger zone.

The consequences do not stop only at nature. Water shortages directly threaten important sectors such as agriculture and fishing, with a negative impact on

the livelihoods of thousands of families. At the same time, rising temperatures and soil erosion are expected to increase flooding, land degradation and biodiversity loss.
