“Railway lines also between cities” - Annual report of the Transport

The Tirana-Durres railway project and the connection to the "Mother Teresa" international airport are considered a success story for Albania.

The Secretariat of the Transport Community, together with members of the Green Group, has presented the report for 2024, focusing on the progress our country has made in terms of railway infrastructure and the projects that are foreseen in the future, but also in air, road and water transport.

Matej Zakonjšek, Director of the Transport Secretariat:

"In Albania we have several projects, Tirana-Durres is in the final stages, which means that very soon we will have complete modernization and we will make the connection with Rinas Airport and thus Tirana will have the first airport connected by rail and when we build the rail network in the region then we will look at the connection between the cities, Durres-Tirana will be a success story when it comes to use by citizens. Other projects that have been mentioned are the eighth corridor and the one that connects Tirana with Podgorica."

The findings in the report also focus on the developments that have occurred with airports in our country.

"In Albania we have a boom in airports, but it must be said that Tirana is number 1 in the region when it comes to increasing the number of passengers and this is related to the beauties of the country and the coast, and this has also brought increased pressure on the country's infrastructure. We see that Tirana airport is expanding, being modernized, but it is necessary to connect it to the railway. Tirana airport is one of the most significant projects being implemented."

Regarding road transport, it is evident that Albania is implementing 7-10 projects aimed at modernizing 177 km of roads. The report emphasizes that the Kakavija border crossing is considered one of the 11 busiest points in the region and interventions will be made to modernize the infrastructure in order to reduce waiting times for citizens and businesses.
