Post-communist neighborhoods with “zero” emissions, the benefits - Green Transition, Bejko: It will not be easy. Ferrero: Chapter 27, challenging
“The transition to zero-emission buildings in post-communist neighborhoods offers significant socio-economic and environmental benefits, including significant reductions in energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and improvements in air quality.” The findings of the case study undertaken in Albania were announced during the closing event of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 GreenForce project, implemented by Co-PLAN and European partners. Its aim was to strengthen research excellence and institutional capacities in the Western Balkans region towards the Green Transition.
“For three years, the GreenForce project has addressed a critical challenge: building research excellence to support a just green transition in the Western Balkans. Coming from a long period of political and socio-economic transition, we know that this transition will not be easy and that the burdens can fall disproportionately on the most vulnerable. So, we did research. We collaborated across borders and disciplines and worked to make the complexity of the green transition understandable and actionable for all,” said Anila Bejko, Executive Director of Co-PLAN.
Meanwhile, representatives of the European Union Delegation to Albania discussed the challenges our country faces in relation to Chapter 27, which includes the environment and climate change.
“Chapter 27 on the environment is indeed one of the most challenging chapters where Albania will have to invest a lot of funds to improve sustainability, but we hope that ideas like GreenForce and the circulation of experiences and resources between the region and between other parts of Europe, universities, academia and industry, will be the way forward so that the environment is not seen as an obstacle, but as an opportunity to improve competitiveness and preserve natural capital”, said Andrea Ferrero, Head of Operations Section for Sustainable Economic and Social Development, EU Delegation to Albania.
According to him, "Horizon is one of these parts called 'accelerated integration', where Albania is already benefiting from membership, even before accession." Albania has been a member of Horizon since 2022 and has benefited from several innovation and research projects.
