Credit to the economy reaches 864 billion lek - BoA: Businesses contributed more

Credit to the economy continued to grow at a rapid pace in the first 3 months of 2025. According to figures just published by the Bank of Albania, credit to the economy reached 864 billion lek in March, an increase of 2% compared to February and 13% compared to March last year.

The biggest impact on this growth was provided by loans received by businesses. Official data show that loans to private businesses increased by 2.5% in March, reaching a value of 488 billion lek. In the case of businesses, foreign currency loans prevail with 264 billion, compared to loans in lek of 223 billion. Even in terms of growth compared to February or compared to the same period in 2024, foreign currency loans are the ones that have had the greatest growth.

What about credit given to other sectors?

Local government and public administration credit is only in lek. Last month, it dropped from 21 to 19 million lek.

Meanwhile, credit to non-financial public corporations, which refers to credit taken by state-owned enterprises, such as OSHEE, UKT and others, increased by almost 2.9% in March. Based on Central Bank statistics, foreign currency credit to non-financial public corporations fell to 9.5 billion lek, from 11.5 billion, while credit in lek increased to 9.2 billion, very close to equaling each other.

As for credit to other resident sectors, which includes credit taken from individuals, but not only, it results to have increased by 1.5% compared to February. Specifically, credit to other resident sectors has reached 336 billion lek. Unlike businesses, credit from other resident sectors has been taken more in lek than in foreign currency.

On the other hand, credit to other financial corporations has fallen to 20 billion lek.
