Controls against pesticides and agricultural products - Draft budget 2026, ISUV: Over 650 million lek to strengthen food safety

The National Food Authority has held a meeting with farmers, collectors, exporters and importers to discuss the use of pesticides and the safety of agricultural products. The meeting, which was also attended by representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and subordinate institutions, highlighted the use of unauthorized pesticides and the lack of documentation for product traceability.
The AKU requested that collection points provide the relevant analyses, while agricultural pharmacies only market authorized pesticides and instruct farmers on their correct use, guaranteeing safer food for the consumer.
Along the same lines, the Food and Veterinary Safety Institute has foreseen in the 2026 draft budget a new project worth 224 million lek to strengthen laboratory capacities and establish infrastructure for pesticide and heavy metal residue analysis in plants. For the period 2026–2028, ISUV will also invest 433 million lek in modern laboratory equipment, which will increase the accuracy and efficiency of food controls.
Meanwhile, the NFA continues field inspections to control the trade of plant protection products. 18 inspections have been carried out in the regions of Vlora, Lezha and Elbasan, where in some cases unregistered products and unlicensed activities have been found, for which administrative measures have been imposed with warnings and fines.
Suspicious products have been blocked for non-compliance with labeling or for lack of registration in the National Register of the Ministry of Agriculture. The National Food Authority emphasizes that it will continue inspections throughout the country, while the responsible institutions are committed to guaranteeing safer food, a fairer market and effective protection of the Albanian consumer.
