Koçiu: Albania is building a modern defense industry with investments and strategic partnerships

Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu stated that Albania is increasing investments in the defense sector and building a modern military industry, as it prepares to host the NATO Summit in 2027.
"Albania will welcome the NATO Summit in 2027, an achievement that reflects the trust of allies and the country's ever-growing role in Euro-Atlantic security. This commitment is being supported by concrete investments, increased capacities and the development of a modern defense industry," said Koçiu.
She emphasized that an investment of 13.2 million euros is being made at the Guna Tactical construction site, part of KAYO, which, according to her, goes beyond the production of military uniforms and equipment.
“The investment of 13.2 million euros, part of the initial agreement with MSSC Group, opens a new strategic direction for Albania,” said Koçiu.
Referring to Albania's commitments to NATO, the Deputy Prime Minister underlined that the government has increased defense funding.
"Through the 2026 Budget Normative Act, we have approved an additional 10.3 billion lek, increasing funding to 2.6% of GDP in line with commitments made within NATO," she stated.
Koçiu assessed that Albania has the potential to position itself as a competitive partner in the defense industry, thanks to its tradition in manufacturing, qualified workforce, and proximity to European markets.
She announced that Guna Tactical has created 800 new jobs and has signed three contracts for the supply of clothing to the Armed Forces, the State Police and the General Directorate of Prisons for the period 2026–2028.
According to Koçiu, the development of the defense industry is also being supported by other strategic partnerships.
"Together with TIMAK Defence and 'Myslym Keta Defence', an integrated chain of the Albanian defense industry is being created, supported by strategic partnerships that bring investments, technology and qualified employment," she said.
Focusing on the cooperation with Fincantieri, Koçiu emphasized that through KAYO, Albania is entering into a joint venture for the production of vessels, with the aim of export.
"The activity in Pashaliman will increase the capabilities of the Navy and position the country as a reference point for ship maintenance and production for NATO partners," she said.
In conclusion, Koçiu said that "this is our vision to turn Albania into a regional center of the defense industry, while simultaneously strengthening national security, the economy and integration into international technology and production chains."
