Who has the most digital skills in Albania? Girls and people with low education

According to Eurostat data, 61.6% of Albanians possess at least basic digital skills, while age, gender, and level of education turn out to be the factors that most influence this indicator.

Denmark leads with 92.1% of young people possessing at least basic digital skills, followed by the Czech Republic with 91.7% and Malta with 91.5%. At the other end of the ranking, only two EU countries have percentages below 60%: Bulgaria with 52.8% and Romania with 53.3%.

Significant differences are also observed in the Western Balkans region. Serbia ranks first with 77.1% of the population with basic digital skills, while North Macedonia has the lowest score with only 44%.

The data also shows that young people, especially those aged 15–24, have higher levels of digital skills, and there is also a gender gap. In Albania, around 64% of girls in this age group have at least basic digital skills, compared to 58% of boys. The same trend is observed in most European countries, where young girls are more skilled in using technology and digital tools.

At the European Union level, this pattern was evident in 22 countries. The largest differences in favor of young women were recorded in Cyprus, Slovenia and Austria, while only five countries reported a higher percentage of boys with basic digital skills, with Malta and Romania showing the largest advantage in favor of men.

Another interesting indicator is related to the level of education. According to Eurostat data for Albania, people with low education are found to have the highest level of basic digital skills, at 66%, followed by those with secondary education at around 63%. Meanwhile, only 51.5% of people with formal higher education are reported to possess basic digital skills.
