EU funds for local development, Elbasan a beneficiary for tourism and the environment

Elbasan is ranked among the regions most benefiting from European Union funds within the IPA Program, specifically the Albania - North Macedonia Cross-Border Cooperation Program 2021–2027.
Speaking about the importance of this program, Socialist Party MP Sara Mila stated that the Elbasan Region is one of the areas that benefits most from cross-border cooperation.
"For the citizens of the Elbasan District, the IPA Cross-Border Cooperation Program Albania - North Macedonia 2021-2027 is very good news, where Elbasan is one of the most beneficiary districts. The work has started since November 2025, but it is expected to be extended in the future. At least for the Elbasan District, it means sustainable tourism, environmental protection, natural and cultural tourism. Rural areas and their promotion are most affected. This means more work for the guesthouses, local guides and artisans that we have in abundance, and the products they have are of a very high quality category. This promotes and helps them directly," said the MP.
According to her, informing local communities about the opportunities the program offers is key, so that the benefits can be spread even further in the future. The benefits are expected to be felt especially in rural areas, creating more employment opportunities and sustainable development.
The IPA program aims to support the local economy, small and family businesses, nature and cultural tourism, as well as strengthening local public services and protection from floods and fires. Currently, two projects have started implementation in Elbasan and Peqin, focused on the development of sustainable tourism and environmental protection. Meanwhile, the municipalities of the Elbasan Region, Elbasan, Belsh, Cërrik, Gramsh, Librazhd, Peqin and Përrenjas, have the opportunity to benefit from European funds for development projects, with up to 85% financing from the European Union.
