What has happened to businesses in 5 years? - Foreign capital dominates from Italy, followed by Kosovo and Greece

Entrepreneurship in Albania is gaining ground. The number of new businesses in Albania has increased significantly in recent years. According to data for the period 2020–2025, the year 2025 results in the highest number of registrations, with a total of 20 thousand 765 new businesses. Meanwhile, the lowest level of registrations was recorded in 2020.
In total, during this five-year period, new business registrations have increased by 32.7%, reflecting a positive trend in the development of entrepreneurship and the business climate in the country.
Another important indicator is related to the presence of foreign capital. By the end of 2025, the highest number of active entities with at least one foreign partner is held by Italy, with 6358 businesses. It is followed by Kosovo with 1609 entities, Greece with 786, North Macedonia with 492 and Montenegro with 75 entities.
Meanwhile, the data also shows the progress of deregistrations in recent years. In 2020, 4,887 businesses were deregistered, in 2021 this number reached 5,105, while in 2022 it dropped to 4,340. The downward trend continues in 2023 with 3,329 deregistrations. In 2024, the number increases again to 4,026, only to suffer another decline in 2025, with 3,729 deregistered businesses.
These indicators reflect a continuous market dynamic, where the increase in registrations is accompanied by fluctuations in deregistrations, reflecting the challenges and developments of the Albanian economy in recent years.
