Two jobs, but only one salary - Hasalla: Unpaid commitment hinders employment

A second job can serve as an opportunity to increase family income, but when it is carried out without pay, without a contract and without insurance, it becomes an obstacle to the employee's professional future. The time spent in an unpaid commitment limits the opportunity to look for another job, to attend training and to acquire new skills, which would help the individual secure more stable and better-paid employment.

“It clearly becomes much more difficult to find another job and to find a stable job, because there is not enough time to invest in another job. It also becomes more difficult to acquire new skills. If we want to have a better-paid job, we need to invest time in training and increasing our skills,”  Gertjana Hasalla, Employment Expert.

In addition to the loss of income and years of insurance, the individual remains unprotected in the event of an accident or injury at work. But the consequences are not limited to the employee. The lack of fair pay directly affects the relationship with the employer and creates a chain effect on all economic activity.

“One of the biggest motivators of any employee in Albania, but also around the world, is pay. As long as you are not paid for your work, or are paid in an unsatisfactory manner, then you have less motivation to work, you have less productivity in the workplace and this also translates into less profits for a company.”

According to Hasalla, fair pay, formalization of the employment relationship, and insurance coverage are not only employee rights. They are also prerequisites for increasing productivity, strengthening trust in employers, and creating a more stable labor market.
