Diaspora will vote even with expired passports and ID cards - Deadline extended, Hoxha: There are 500 thousand expired IDs
The government has extended the validity of expired passports and ID cards for the diaspora so that citizens have the opportunity to vote in the May 11 elections.
The news was announced by Interior Minister Ervin Hoxha after a government meeting. According to him, there are 500,000 expired IDs and that with the extension of the deadline, all Albanians abroad can vote.
"The Council of Ministers approved the extension of the validity periods of identity cards and biometric passports. This situation will resolve the created impasse. There are about 500 thousand Albanian citizens whose documents have expired. With the approval of this act, all Albanian citizens living abroad will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote as a constitutional right. All Albanian citizens will vote according to the instructions of the CEC by registering on the electronic platform," said Interior Minister Hoxha.
The deadline for extending the validity is May 31, 2025.
