Border car insurance "abandoned" - More profit for companies in 2025.

In 2025, insurance companies compensated a larger number of people, but in smaller amounts than in 2024. The latest data from the Financial Supervisory Authority shows a 0.7% decrease in claims paid by companies.

So, last year, insurance companies undertook to cover a greater number of damages in the event of an accident, and not only that, but less money was spent than in the previous year.

For border insurance, 2025 was also a negative year. Fewer vehicles with foreign license plates are preferring to be insured when entering Albanian territory. Official figures show a 0.6% decrease in the volume of gross written premiums compared to 2024, while the number of contracts signed has also followed the same trend.

Meanwhile, all other motor insurance products such as Domestic MTPL, Green Card, other life and non-life insurance, such as property, have continued to grow. The decline in interest on border insurance has not translated into lower income for insurance companies, as total premiums from insurance policies have continued to be high. Combined with a lower value of claims paid than a year ago, insurance companies have had a higher profit in 2025.

The market share remains almost the same. The dependence on non-life insurance has accompanied all of 2025. However, life insurance products also appear to have gained more ground than in 2024.

Meanwhile, from the perspective of market division by type of insurance, compulsory and voluntary, the dependence on compulsory products such as car or home and life insurance when a citizen takes out a loan has deepened. Gross written premiums of voluntary insurance account for 37.62% and gross written premiums of compulsory insurance account for 62.38% of the total market.
