Businesses get 224 million euros in VAT back - 1,652 requests refunded, over 1,000 others rejected
During 2024, the tax administration reimbursed VAT to businesses in a total amount (FIFO and installments) of approximately 22.4 billion lek or 224 million euros, about 1.1% less than in 2023.
According to official data from the General Directorate of Taxes, during the period January - December 2024, 2678 refund requests were registered (out of 2877 requests registered in 2023), with a total value of 38.7 billion lek.
A total of 1,652 requests worth 27.5 billion lek were accepted and 1,026 requests worth 11.2 billion lek were not accepted due to non-fulfillment of legal criteria.
Of the 1652 requests received, 95 requests worth 858 million lek were made by taxpayers classified as Zero Risk exporters, whose request should be automatically approved and reimbursed within 30 days; 866 requests worth 11.9 billion lek were made by taxpayers classified as exporters, whose request should be approved and reimbursed within 30 days; 691 requests worth 14.7 billion lek were made by taxpayers classified as non-exporters, whose request should be approved and reimbursed within 60 days from the date of the request.
The largest portion of the refunded amount (around 57.74%) was given to large taxpayers.
Regarding processing time, for the period January - December 2024, 1601 FIFO requests were approved and reimbursed and the average processing time was 31 days and 56% of requests were processed within 30 days. About 43% of requests were processed within the 60-day period.
Only 1% of requests were processed over 120 days and the main reason was the non-payment of Social Security and Health Insurance Contributions by taxpayers.
By the end of 2024, the Reimbursement Directorate reported that a total of about 258 requests were in process (from 145 requests that resulted in 2023), with an increase in number of about 71% compared to 2023.
