"EU ready to open other chapters with Albania" - Commissioner Kos: There will be new member states within my mandate
The Commissioner for Enlargement in the European Union, Marta Kos, during her report to the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament, stated that the pace of reforms in Albania is accelerating significantly, bringing the country closer to full membership in the EU by 2030.
"We have a real opportunity to admit one or more candidate countries with full rights to the European Union within 2029. In the case of Albania, we have already opened 24 negotiation chapters. In the last two months alone, we have opened the second and third group chapters. This candidate country has understood the new momentum for enlargement and is undertaking reforms faster than ever before. We want candidate countries to become part of our common security system. The rule of law remains non-negotiable."
Commissioner Kos also emphasized that within June, Albania could open other chapters, and expressed her conviction that during her mandate there will be new EU memberships.
"We must continue to support our friends in the Western Balkans on their path towards membership in the European Union. So far we have seen concrete steps with the opening of group chapters with Albania, over the past year and the month we left behind – and there will be more in the months to come."
The opening of new chapters with Albania was also supported by the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, David McAllister, who during his speech emphasized that Albania is on the right track and must continue with high intensity the reforms it has initiated.
