Matura "competition": "easy" choices, low results/ Elective

The path from high school to university passes through the state matura exams, where the results in each subject play a decisive role. Although the compulsory subjects are important, it is precisely the elective subjects that determine the university direction and, consequently, the future profession. Taking as a trigger the launch today of the first matura exam, foreign language, “Scan Intel” has analyzed the results of the elective subjects for the past year, to understand how the graduates performed in the disciplines they have chosen themselves.

According to data from the "Educational Services Center", among the most preferred subjects was Economics with 9,135 high school graduates, followed by Civics and Psychology with 7,647 and Biology with 4,331. On the other hand, Chemistry resulted in the lowest interest, with only 161 high school graduates.

These trends also coincide with university enrollment data, where business, administration, and law majors remain among the most popular.

But what is striking is the contrast between the popularity of a subject and the results achieved in it: subjects chosen by more high school graduates generally have lower grades. For example, Geography has an average of only 5.79, Civics 6.51 and History 6.69. Meanwhile, less chosen subjects such as Chemistry or Physics, score significantly higher averages.

Why does this happen?

The first can be explained by the lower competition as a result of the larger number of high school graduates who have chosen it. Another reason is related to the fact that many high school graduates choose social studies subjects because they are perceived as “easier” or safer, even though they may not have the proper preparation. Meanwhile, scientific or exact subjects are usually chosen by those who have better inclination, motivation and preparation, which is reflected in higher grades.

For 2024, the pass rate in compulsory subjects was over 99%, but it is precisely the performance in elective subjects that makes the difference between a place in the dream major.
