2.4 million euros for pesticide safety - New project to strengthen laboratories

An important project to strengthen laboratory capacities and establish technical infrastructure for pesticide and heavy metal residue analysis in plants will be launched next year. The project, which will be financed from the budget of the Ministry of Agriculture, has a total value of around 2.4 million euros.

This investment is considered necessary, following the numerous problems encountered by Albanian producers, where a number of shipments have been returned to customs due to high levels of pesticides, causing major economic losses.

In this regard, the investment aims to modernize existing laboratories, increase analytical equipment to EU standards and expand technical capacities for monitoring food and environmental safety. This project is expected to increase the accuracy, speed and transparency of plant product analyses, improving food chain control and harmonization with international practices.

This investment is essential for increasing the reliability of domestic products in the domestic and export markets, especially in the agriculture and agro-industry sector. Furthermore, the investment is expected to contribute to consumer protection and minimizing health risks related to the level of harmful substances in plant products.

Works to build and equip the new laboratories are expected to begin in early 2026, while the project will be implemented in phases, and is expected to be completed in 2028.

On the other hand, a project for laboratory equipment for the Food and Veterinary Safety Institute (ISUV) will be launched in parallel, worth 4.3 million euros, which will also end in 2028.

This investment will be an important step towards increasing food safety standards and strengthening the competitiveness of domestic products in international markets, at a time when the agricultural sector chapters have also been opened for membership negotiations with the European Union.
