2046 candidates for 140 seats - Parliamentary race in Albania
The elections of May 11, 2025 set another historical record: 2,046 candidates competed for just 140 seats in the Albanian Parliament. An average of 15 candidates for each mandate – a figure that speaks not only of the diversity of the political offer, but also of the increasing fragmentation and polarization of the electoral scene.
Who are these candidates?
The list includes political figures with long careers, new representatives of traditional parties, candidates from new opposition forces, but also representatives of civil society, activists and independent candidates.
The Albanian voter faces a broader offer than ever before – but also more complex.
Ballot paper
In the main districts, the physical size of the ballot paper has increased significantly: Tirana – 539 candidates on one sheet, Fier 231 candidates, while Durrës and Elbasan have 209 candidates each.
The ballot paper will measure 58.3 cm by 29.7 cm in all districts – a sheet the size of a mini-poster, with dozens of names listed, requiring high attention and concentration from the citizen.
The challenge for the citizen: to make an informed choice
The high number of candidates is, in one sense, an indicator of democratic vitality – but it risks creating confusion, visual fatigue and invalid votes, especially in larger constituencies.
Beyond this, this is also the clearest sign that Albanian democracy is entering a new phase: more competition, more actors, more ideas.
