Serbia presents the Green Budget - 1 billion euros for environmental projects, over 50% of funds for railways
Serbia's 2025 budget includes the first annex of the Green Budget, listing 64 projects to be implemented by the ministries of environmental protection, agriculture, construction and energy.
Official sources announce that more than half of the funds will go to the railways. The total amount planned for 64 green projects is 1 billion euros.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the Green Budget annex includes for the first time provisions for projects and activities that specifically contribute to environmental protection. This annex is now a mandatory part of the budget, in accordance with the recent changes in the Law on the Budgetary System, the ministry emphasized.
Its purpose is to ensure a better allocation of resources and encourage the implementation of projects that contribute to environmental protection, energy efficiency, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, renewable resources and sustainable waste and water management.
Of the total amount of 1 billion euros, about 528 million are intended for the construction or reconstruction of railways and the creation of a metro system in Belgrade.
An increase in rail transport contributes to environmental protection and reduction of CO2 emissions, compared to road transport, as well as increases energy efficiency, according to the document.
The projects with the highest value in the Green Budget are the Serbo-Hungarian railway and the railway between the Zemun Polje district in Belgrade and the proposed national stadium in the vicinity of this area, with both initiatives requiring around 154 million euros each.
