Payments over 2000 euros only through the bank - Kosovo, restriction comes into force. Aims to reduce the informal economy

Today, the decision of the Kosovo Tax Administration (ATK) entered into force, according to which payments between businesses and individuals in the amount of over 2,000 euros can no longer be made in cash.
According to TAK, all transactions exceeding this amount must be carried out only through the banking system or through other forms of electronic payments.
This restriction is in accordance with the legislation in force and aims to formalize the economy, increase financial transparency and reduce the use of cash in large transactions. In its announcements, TAK has emphasized that even in cases where the payment is divided into several installments, the total value of the transaction is considered in the application of the legal restriction.
"Payments over 2,000 euros can no longer be made in cash. From June 1, 2026, if a business sells goods or provides services to individuals, payments over this amount must be made through a bank or electronic forms. Even if the payment is divided into several parts, the limit applies to the total value of the transaction. Do not accept cash over 2,000 euros. Act according to the law and avoid fines," the TAK announcement states.
Authorities have called on citizens and businesses to respect the legal restriction, in order to avoid possible fines and penalties. According to some estimates, informality in Kosovo reaches 30-35% of Gross Domestic Product.
