Kosovo, 50 million euros for energy efficiency - EBRD investment aims to increase efficiency in public buildings
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is increasing its support for energy efficiency in public buildings in Kosovo, through a sovereign loan of up to 50 million euros to the Ministry of Finance.
The loan is part of a project worth at least 86 million euros that will be co-financed with 12.6 million euros from the Kosovo government, a 7 million euro grant from the European Union through the Regional Energy Efficiency Programme for the Western Balkans, and 3 million euros from the Danish Fund for Kosovo. The rest will be provided by technical cooperation funds.
The project includes the implementation of energy efficiency measures and the renovation of around 400 public buildings occupied by state-owned enterprises and administrative, educational and health facilities at the central and municipal levels.
The measures include installing thermal insulation, improving heating, lighting and electrical systems, replacing doors and windows, and completing the necessary structural and comfort steps.
As a result, energy and maintenance costs in these buildings will fall, leading to average energy savings of 30 to 50 percent, while greenhouse gas emissions will be significantly reduced.
Renovating public and private buildings is vital if Kosovo wants to improve efficiency and meet its climate goals. The building sector is the largest energy consumer in Europe, accounting for more than a third of EU emissions.
Since the start of operations in Kosovo in 2012, the EBRD has supported the country’s energy efficiency initiatives through a series of loans, including direct financing to the municipalities of Pristina and Prizren to renovate up to 150 public buildings. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is a leading institutional investor in the country, having disbursed more than €770 million across 120 projects to date.
