Slovakia secures Russian gas - Prime Minister Fico announces the agreement with

Slovakia has ensured the supply of Russian gas after the interruption of transit from Ukraine, according to Prime Minister Robert Fico. He announced that he had reached an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the last meeting in Moscow.

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that he had secured the country's gas supply during a visit to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last month, shortly before Ukraine halted gas transit from Russia in early 2025.

"I had to provide a minimum of gas for Slovakia's internal consumption, something we provided," Fico emphasized. He did not provide further details and the government office did not respond to requests for further comment.

Fico has accused Kiev of hurting Slovakia by not extending a transit agreement for Russian gas that expired at the end of 2024. He has also threatened to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine and reduce aid to its citizens.

According to data from the Eustream transmission network, Slovakia has continued to receive Russian gas coming via Hungary, which is supplied via Turk Stream, since the ban on flows from Ukraine.

Fico said the ban on Russian supplies through Ukraine has cost the country 500 million euros in transit fees and 1 billion euros in higher gas prices.

The Slovak Prime Minister will meet with European Commission officials in Brussels to discuss the ban on gas transit to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has accused Fico of launching a "second energy front" against Ukraine at the behest of Russia.
