Romania, a leader in Europe - Becomes the largest natural gas producer in the EU

Romania has overtaken the Netherlands to become the largest natural gas producer in the European Union, according to Romanian Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja. The result marks a historic moment for the country and a significant change in Europe's energy landscape.

The Minister of Energy announced that Romania secured the first place, surpassing the Netherlands, which had long been the main supplier of natural gas to the EU. Burduja stressed that with the future exploitation of gas reserves in the Black Sea, Romania will not only strengthen its position, but will also become a major exporter.

"Last year, Romania became the number one natural gas producer in the European Union. We surpassed the Netherlands and with the entry of Neptun Deep into operation, we will be the undisputed leader," he said.

Currently, about 10% of Romania’s natural gas production comes from shallow-water fields in the Black Sea. The Neptun Deep project, operated by OMV Petrom and Romgaz, is expected to significantly boost offshore extraction. Burduja noted that the first well has already been drilled at over 1,000 meters in depth, with nine more planned.

This development will not only ensure Romania's energy independence, but will also support energy-intensive industries such as the pharmaceutical sector, ceramics and fertilizer production, increasing the country's competitiveness in these areas.

With this new strategic position, Romania is strengthening Europe's energy security by unlocking new opportunities for economic growth, in a period troubled by trade conflicts.
