Poland imposes border controls with Germany - The measure aims to curb the flow of illegal immigrants
Poland will introduce temporary controls on its borders with Germany and Lithuania to curb illegal immigration, the move comes amid a tense political climate where immigration is becoming a central issue in many European countries.
Poland will introduce temporary controls along its borders with Germany and Lithuania on July 7, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said, joining several other European Union countries that are reintroducing border controls to curb illegal immigration. Tusk's liberal government has been accused by nationalist opposition parties of accepting illegal migrants returned from Germany. He has argued that the numbers are limited.
The debate over immigration in Poland has become increasingly heated in recent weeks, with far-right activists starting to organize patrols along the border with Germany. The Polish prime minister said the checks were necessary to reduce “uncontrolled” immigration flows.
Germany announced in February that it would extend its temporary border controls for six months. Tusk added that if German controls are extended beyond September, Poland’s response will be “symmetrical.” Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Berlin wants to preserve the bloc’s open-border Schengen scheme, which allows passport-free movement, but that it can only work if it is not abused by criminals smuggling migrants.
“We know that the Polish government also wants to introduce border controls with Lithuania to limit illegal crossings from Lithuania to Poland,” Merz said at a press conference. “So we have a common problem that we want to solve together.”
Poland is facing a migration crisis it says has been orchestrated by Belarus and Russia on its eastern border since 2021. Both countries deny encouraging migrants to cross. Tusk cited flows from Belarus to Lithuania and then to Poland as a reason for imposing controls on the northern border.
