Over 5.7 million Italians in absolute poverty - Foreigners and children most

According to data published by Istat, in 2024, around 2.2 million families in Italy were in conditions of absolute poverty, representing 8.4% of resident families. This translates into 5.7 million individuals (or 9.8% of the population), a percentage that remains stable compared to 2023, when it was 8.4% for families and 9.7% for individuals.

The situation is particularly dire for families with foreigners: 30.4% of them are in absolute poverty, a percentage that rises to 35.2% for those made up only of foreigners. Meanwhile, the percentage shrinks to 6.2% for families with only Italian citizens.

Relative poverty, which affects the standard of living without excluding the possibility of basic survival, also remains stable at 10.9%, affecting more than 2.8 million households. Among individuals, this figure has increased slightly, rising to 14.9% (from 14.5% in 2023).

In 2024, over 1 million 283 thousand children were affected by absolute poverty (13.8% of resident children). This indicator ranges from 12.1% in Central Italy, to 16.4% in the South. The values remain at the highest level since 2014.

Economic hardship is particularly felt in families with children, with around 734,000 of them living in absolute poverty (12.3%). Even among couples with minor children, poverty increases depending on their number: 7.3% with one child, 10.6% with two, and 20.7% with three or more.

According to Istat, absolute poverty remains most widespread in Southern Italy, where it affects over 886,000 families, or 10.5% of the total in that region. Meanwhile, Central Italy registers the lowest percentage, with 349,000 families, accounting for 6.5% of the region.
