Macron calls for suspension of investments in the US - Warns of

French President Emmanuel Macron called on European companies to suspend planned investments in the United States, after US President Donald Trump announced sweeping global tariffs.

"Investments that are coming or investments announced in recent weeks must be suspended until things are clarified with the United States," Macron said during a meeting with representatives of French industry.

The comments come weeks after French shipping firm CMA CGM announced plans to invest $20 billion in the U.S. to build logistics and shipping terminals, a plan that was praised by President Trump at the time and mentioned again in his speech on Wednesday.

French electrical equipment supplier Schneider Electric said late last month that it would invest $700 million in the country to support U.S. energy infrastructure that will serve the development of artificial intelligence.

Macron said no response to Trump's tariffs had yet been ruled out and suggested using the anti-dumping mechanism, an EU instrument to protect the bloc's trade. He also suggested targeting digital services and US financial systems.

The French president added that the response to reciprocal tariffs would be "more powerful" than previous retaliation to US tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Macron called the tariffs "brutal and unfounded" and a shock to international trade.
