Italy, with more cars per capita in the EU - Out of 257 million vehicles in the

In 2023, the number of passenger cars registered in the EU reached almost 257 million, corresponding to an increase of 6.7% compared to 2018, according to Eurostat. The largest number of registered passenger cars was observed in Germany with 49 million cars, followed by Italy (almost 41 million) and France (more than 39 million cars).

Italy is the country with the most vehicles per capita in the European Union, with 694 passenger cars per 1,000 inhabitants. In second place is Luxembourg with 675 cars per thousand inhabitants. Below we find countries like Cyprus (665), Finland (664) and Estonia (630 cars per 1000 inhabitants). This compares to an EU average of 571 vehicles for every 1,000 inhabitants.

On the other hand, a particularly low degree of motorization is registered in Latvia (418 cars per 1000 inhabitants), despite a 10% increase in the number of registered cars during the period 2018-2023.

Eurostat says the transition to less polluting cars is moving slowly. In 2023, Luxembourg had the highest number of 'newer' vehicles, while Romania had the highest proportion of cars older than 20 years, followed by Finland and Estonia.

Despite an increase over recent years, alternative fuel cars accounted for only a minority of the total in the EU in 2023, ranked behind petrol and diesel. This figure in most countries is still below 20%.

However, in 2023 the number of electric cars in EU countries exceeded 4.4 million, about 89 times more than in 2013 and 12 times compared to 2018. The highest growth rates were observed between 2019 and 2020 (85.2 %) and between 2020 and 2021 (77.5%). Their number in total passenger cars increased from 0.02% to 1.7%.
