Greece, Mitsotakis proposes new president - Voting for Konstantinos Tassoulas

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has selected Parliament Speaker Konstantinos Tassoulas from his center-right New Democracy party for the Greek presidency.

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou's five-year term expires in March, and a parliamentary vote for the post is expected on January 25. To take office, a candidate needs the support of at least 151 lawmakers in the 300-seat parliament.

New Democracy, which has been in power since 2019, has 156 seats, but the recent expulsion of a former prime minister from its parliamentary group has raised doubts about its cohesion.

The party has also suffered a decline in popularity ratings due to the cost of living crisis and reforms that have alienated some core Conservative voters, according to polls.

Tasoulas has been a lawyer and lawmaker since 2000 and has also served as culture minister. Mitsotakis said he chose the 66-year-old because of his political experience and "his unifying spirit."

His appointment is seen by political analysts as a conservative and risk-free move by the government, which wants to secure support from all factions of New Democracy and maintain its majority.

Opposition parties are not expected to support his candidacy. The left-wing Syriza party has nominated Louka Katseli, a former economy minister who served as director at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
