“Increased flights hinder climate targets” - According to the

The number of air passengers is forecast to double by 2050, driving up demand for fuel and hampering the aviation industry's steps to reduce emissions, a study by the Transport and Environment group showed.

As aviation industry leaders meet in Dublin this week for an annual financial conference where a slew of aircraft sales are expected, the Brussels-based group called on the European Union to implement measures to limit the sector's growth.

Steps to mitigate rapidly growing air travel could include limiting the growth of airport infrastructure and corporate travel by increasing taxes on the sector, the report said.

The airline industry, which accounts for about 2.5% of global carbon emissions, has pledged to use sustainable aviation fuel in a bid to cut emissions and reach net zero by 2050. But tight supply and prices up to five times higher than traditional jet fuel mean little of the greener fuel is in use.

The report highlighted that the industry's fuel use is projected to increase by 59% by 2050, compared to 2019 levels, as passenger numbers increase.

"The more they grow, the further they fall short of climate targets. At this rate, planes will still burn two billion barrels of oil a year in 2050, despite using sustainable fuel," analysts say.

The airline industry has consistently resisted calls to limit growth, saying the sector is essential for economic development and global connectivity.
