Greeks work more, get paid less - Half of employees are not compensated for

Total working hours constitute by far the "Achilles heel" of the Greek employee, who works more hours than his contractual obligation, without corresponding pay, and at least one weekend per month. Also, one in five employees declares that he works at night at least once a month.

The Employee Profile in terms of Hours is an “artistic” research by the GSEE Labor Institute, which focuses on the regulation of working time, the health and well-being of employees. Long working hours pose a risk to the physical and mental health of employees, as well as to their safety, the Labor Institute noted.

According to the survey, 52% of respondents stated that they work more overtime hours than specified in their contract. 15% stated that they work one to two overtime hours and 14% work three to five overtime hours per week. A smaller percentage (8%) stated that their weekly work exceeded 6 to 8 hours, while 5% of respondents stated that they worked 8 to 10 overtime hours per week and 9% more than 10 hours.

30% stated that they worked over 10 hours a day more than twice a month. 11% once a month, while 58% of respondents stated that their daily work during the month never exceeded 10 hours.

Almost half of respondents (49%) said they were not paid for their overtime, while 16% received only a portion of the expected pay for overtime. This means that 65% of employees were not paid at all, or were paid only partially, for their overtime work. Only 34% of respondents received full pay for their overtime.

41% of employees stated that they worked more than two weekends a month and 15% once a month. That is, 56% of them work at least one weekend a month.

82% of respondents stated that they did not work at night. On the contrary, 3% stated that they worked at night once a month, while 15% worked at night more than twice a month. The combined responses to these questions indicate that about 2 in 3 employees work at least one weekend and about 1 in 5 people work at night at least once a month.

Regarding unannounced shift changes, 38% of respondents stated that they did not work shifts, while 53% stated that shift changes never occurred without notice or occurred very rarely. While 9% of employees stated that unannounced shift changes were frequent or very frequent.
