Germany promises to increase cooperation with the US - Chancellor Merz

Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Germany, Europe's largest economy, is ready to take on a greater leading role in future trade deals with the US before the July 9 deadline.

Merz told reporters he had a productive meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House and the two had agreed to strengthen cooperation on trade and other issues.

Merz said he and Trump spoke at length about trade and tariffs. The German leader highlighted the presence of German auto factories in the United States.

Trump has set a July 9 deadline for the European Union and other trading partners to reach a trade deal and avoid high tariffs. U.S. and EU officials met in Paris on Wednesday and said negotiations were constructive and progressing quickly. Europe, which already faces a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum and a 25% on car imports, could see further tariff increases of 10% to 50% if a deal is not reached.

Merz said the US measures are having a significant impact on German carmakers. He noted that German carmakers produced around 400,000 vehicles in the United States, roughly the same number as in Germany, with some of those cars then being exported back to Berlin.

The German Chancellor said she would also raise the issue with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, adding that there was room and potential to reach a solution.

"If a trade dispute escalates, it hurts everyone, it also hurts German manufacturers in America and the approximately one million American families who are paid by German firms. I am optimistic that we will make progress," Merz concluded.
