Germany, 60% of energy from green sources - Wind leads production with 26%,

Germany's power generation passed a green milestone in 2024, with renewables making up over 59 percent of electricity production, according to the latest figures. This figure has increased from 56 percent in 2023, the Federal Regulatory Network Agency announced in the country.

Wind was the main source of energy at 25.9 percent, despite a year that didn't favor that type of weather much. Solar energy recorded the biggest increase thanks to new installations and "a tremendous amount of sunshine" during the summer, the agency noted.

The expansion of solar electricity is driven by a rapid increase in installed capacity from 2022. Official measures to prioritize solar energy include greater rewards and simplified grid connections for small photovoltaic systems, as well as reforms to reduce bureaucracy.

The German government has also declared that renewables are in the overriding public interest, a privileged legal status that opens up faster permitting procedures, analysts explain.

The latest figures show a 10.9 percent decline in fossil fuels. However, electricity generation from gas increased by 8.6 percent, accounting for 13.2 percent of total generation, due to low prices.

2024 was the first full year in which nuclear power no longer played a role in total generation in Germany, as the last nuclear power plants were shut down in April 2023.

Europe's largest economy has set itself a target to be climate neutral by 2045, with an interim target of cutting emissions by 65 percent in 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
