Britain, mandatory digital IDs for employees - Government measure aims to curb illegal immigration
The British government has announced that every employee will have to have a mandatory digital identity document, as part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's efforts to curb illegal immigration.
Speaking at the Global Progress Summit alongside the leaders of Canada, Australia and Iceland, Starmer said left-leaning governments have often been reluctant to address voters' concerns about immigration. This has allowed parties like Reform UK to gain popularity and challenge Labour in the next election, scheduled for 2029.
"That is why today I am announcing that this government will make a new, free, digital ID for the right to work mandatory until the end of this parliamentary term," Starmer declared.
Polls show that immigration is a top concern for voters, and Starmer is under intense pressure to crack down on illegal immigration, particularly through small boat crossings from France. However, his plan has been criticised by political opponents.
"It is ridiculous to think that those who already break immigration laws will start to respect the rules, or that digital ID cards will affect illegal, cash-based work," said a spokesman for Reform UK, which is currently leading in the polls.
The government announced that the digital identification tool will be stored on the phone and will become a mandatory part of the checks that employers must carry out when hiring staff. Over time, the document will also be used to access services such as childcare, social assistance and access to tax records.
Identity cards are common in many European countries, including France, Germany, Greece, Italy, and Spain.
According to an Ipsos poll in July, 57% of Britons support a national ID card system. However, about 3 in 10 citizens expressed concerns about the unauthorized use of personal data and the sale of information to private companies.
