Britain, 37% fewer work visas in 2024 - Immigration restrictions affect health, social care sectors
The UK suffered a sharp drop in the number of visas granted to foreign workers in 2024, according to official figures. Far fewer health and social care workers were allowed entry, following restrictions imposed by the previous government.
British authorities granted 210,098 work visas in the twelve months to the end of December, a 37% drop compared with a year earlier, according to immigration statistics from the Home Office.
Visas for health and social care workers fell by 81% to 27,174, continuing a downward trend that began early last year, following restrictions by the previous Conservative government to reduce net migration.
Immigration has been one of the main issues facing the country for years. According to voters, it played a major role in the 2016 vote to leave the European Union.
Critics say the large influx of immigrants has added pressure on public services, while others say they are needed to fill vacancies in certain sectors, particularly healthcare.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, like his predecessors, has pledged to reduce immigration, saying he would draw up a plan to reform the immigration system, which would put the onus on businesses to train British workers.
His proposal came in response to official data showing that net migration had reached a record of more than 900,000 people in the year to June 2023, much higher than initial estimates.
