Barcelona plans airport expansion - 3.2 billion euro investment will

Catalonia has given approval for airport operator Aena to carry out a 3.2 billion euro expansion of Barcelona-El Prat airport, Salvador Illa, the region's president, told reporters.

The agreement, between the Spanish Ministry of Transport, the Catalan government and Aena, includes the extension of a third runway and the construction of a satellite terminal. A remodeling of Terminals 1 and 2, as well as the parking area, is also planned.

In addition, almost 300 hectares of the neighboring Llobregat agricultural field park will be converted back into wetlands, to offset the anticipated environmental impact of the works.

The planned expansion, which has been discussed for years, has been criticized by environmentalists and activist groups opposed to overexploitation. These protests are also supported by far-left parties.

Aena and the airlines have said the expansion will allow more direct flights from the United States and Asia, which are coveted markets for the local tourism industry.

The new terminal is expected to increase the airport's capacity to 70 million annual passengers, from the current 55 million.

Last year, Spain hosted a record 94 million tourists, making it the second most popular destination in the world after France.
