Elections in Canada, record early voting - Trump's threats increase

A record 7.3 million people have cast their ballots during four days of early voting in Canada's election, official figures show, in a possible sign of heightened interest in the April 28 election.

Elections Canada said the estimated number of voters from Friday to Monday marked a 25% increase compared to the 5.8 million preliminary votes cast in the 2021 election. Canada, a country with a population of 41 million, has 28.9 million eligible voters, Elections Canada reported in November.

US President Donald Trump's election campaign dominated by threats has galvanized voters, including extremely high ratings for two debates last week.

Liberal leader Prime Minister Mark Carney is in the lead, but some polls show Pierre Poilievre's Conservative party is gradually gaining ground. Public broadcaster CBC polls give the Liberals 43.1% support, with the Conservatives at 38.4%. The Conservatives have gained one point in the past two weeks, according to the data.

Carney, a 60-year-old who previously led the central banks of Canada and Britain, says his global experience in managing economic crises makes him the ideal candidate to lead Canada through a trade war sparked by Trump's tariffs.

Meanwhile, Poilievre says weak growth under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's 10-year rule left Canada vulnerable to Trump and the country cannot afford a fourth consecutive Liberal government.

Most Canadian elections are multi-party battles with the left-wing New Democratic Party and the Bloc Quebecois playing crucial roles in the composition of parliament.

This year, polls point to a two-party liberal-conservative race, with smaller parties facing significant obstacles.
