Global hunger continues to decline in 2025 - Africa the most affected continent, 1 in 5 people malnourished
Global hunger fell for the third consecutive year in 2025, with improvements recorded on every continent. However, growing risks from climate change and disruptions to trade chains could threaten further progress, a United Nations report said.
Some 645 million people, or 7.8% of the world's population, experienced hunger last year, up from 8.1% in 2024 and 8.6% in 2022, according to the "State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World" report, prepared by five UN agencies. The progress was driven mainly by improvements in Asia, especially India, as well as Latin America and the Caribbean. Several African countries also reversed several years of worsening trends, although the continent had the largest undernourished population in the world in 2025, with 309 million people affected, or 1 in 5 Africans.
Global hunger is expected to continue falling through 2030, according to UN experts. “The big difference with previous years is that this year hunger rates have fallen on all continents, including Africa, although very little,” Maximo Torero, chief economist at the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization, told Reuters in an interview.
Torero said the trend offered grounds for optimism, but warned that geopolitical tensions and weather disruptions posed significant threats to global food systems. Among the near-term concerns are problems with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for energy and agricultural inputs. The disruption is driving up the prices of fuel, fertilizers and transportation, raising the costs of food production around the world.
Even a potentially severe El Niño this year could damage agricultural production in the regions that could be affected. “We hope that the trend does not change, but there are some risks that affect us now,” Torero concluded.
