Trump cancels climate regulation basis - Ends vehicle emissions standards

President Donald Trump's administration announced the repeal of a scientific finding that showed greenhouse gas emissions endanger human health and eliminated federal exhaust emission standards for cars and trucks.

This is the administration's most comprehensive rollback of climate change policies to date, following a series of regulatory cuts and other moves aimed at unleashing fossil fuel development and hindering the deployment of clean energy.

"Under the EPA's recently completed process, we are officially ending so-called hazard disclosure, a disastrous Obama-era policy that severely damaged the American auto industry and raised prices for American consumers," Trump said, adding that this was the largest deregulatory action in US history.

The Environmental Protection Agency said the finding of endangerment was based on a misinterpretation of federal clean air laws that are intended to protect Americans from pollutants that harm through local or regional exposure, not through global warming.

Trump announced the repeal alongside EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and White House budget director Russ Vought, who has long sought to revoke the finding and was a key architect of the conservative policy plan, Project 2025.

Trump has said he believes climate change is a “hoax” and has withdrawn the United States from the Paris Agreement, leaving the world’s largest historical contributor to global warming out of international efforts to combat it. He has also signed legislation that repeals Biden-era tax credits aimed at accelerating the deployment of electric cars and renewable energy.
