Trilateral meeting on nuclear weapons - China, Russia and Iran to discuss

China will host high-level talks with Russia and Iran in Beijing on Friday to address Tehran's nuclear program.

The countries' foreign ministers will exchange views on Iran's nuclear activities and regional security issues, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning.

China is deepening strategic ties with Russia and Iran, with all three countries participating in the "Bridge of Security-2025" naval exercises. The Chinese navy arrived in waters near Iran's Chabahar port and concluded a naval assembly with the Iranian and Russian navies on Sunday morning, marking the start of the joint exercise.

This military cooperation comes at the same time as diplomatic initiatives by US President Donald Trump, who has sought to revive direct nuclear negotiations with Iran. Trump last week said he had sent a personal letter to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, urging renewed talks and advocating a diplomatic solution.

"We are in the final stages with Iran," Trump said, stressing his desire to reach a peace deal rather than confrontation. Tehran, however, rejected the initiative, reflecting deep distrust of Washington.

However, Iran has shown a conditional willingness to discuss its nuclear program after Trump proposed reducing its nuclear stockpiles. Tehran's mission to the UN said talks could continue if they were limited to military aspects.

Trump seeks to engage Russia and China in discussions to significantly reduce their nuclear arsenals and defense budgets. He has outlined an ambition to halve military spending, noting that "existing arsenals could destroy the world 50 or 100 times over."

However, previous US efforts to engage China in nuclear arms reductions have consistently met with resistance from Beijing. The Asian superpower maintains that the US and Russia must first significantly reduce their nuclear stockpiles.
