Microsoft cuts staff - Lays off about 6,000 people, focuses on "AI"

Microsoft announced that it is laying off 3% of employees across all levels, teams and geographies, a decision affecting about 6,000 people.

"We continue to implement necessary organizational changes to better position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement.

The company reported better-than-expected results, with $25.8 billion in quarterly net income and an optimistic outlook at the end of April.

Microsoft had 228,000 employees worldwide at the end of June. But Washington state said the company was reducing the number of employees associated with its Redmond headquarters by 1,985 people, including 1,510 in the office.

In total, it is expected to be Microsoft's largest round of layoffs since eliminating 10,000 positions in 2023. In January, the company announced a smaller round of cuts that were based on performance. But the new layoffs are not performance-related, a company spokesman said.

One of the goals is to reduce layers of management. In January, Amazon announced it was laying off some employees after noticing “unnecessary layers” in its organization. Last week, cybersecurity software provider CrowdStrike announced it would lay off 5% of its workforce.

Earlier this year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told analysts that the company would make changes to its sales execution after it reported slower-than-expected growth in Azure cloud revenue, which was not tied to innovative technology. While growth in its artificial intelligence cloud exceeded internal forecasts.

"In a time of platform change, you have to build on the wins of the new design, and not just keep doing the things you did in the previous generation," sources within the company said.
