US ceasefire with Iran is faltering - New wave of attacks, Rutte: Attacks are necessary

NATO's European leaders are aiming to persuade Donald Trump to recommit to the military alliance, after the US President revived disagreements over the Iran war and Greenland and launched a new wave of attacks on Iran.
Upon arriving in the Turkish capital, Trump sharply criticized allies who did not support the US in the war with Iran and said he might have boycotted the meeting if it had not been for his friendship with the organizer, President Tayyip Erdogan.
The US then launched new military strikes on Iran and revoked a license allowing Iran to sell oil in response to attacks on three tankers. It was the latest blow to a fragile ceasefire agreement in a war that is deeply unpopular in Europe.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte defended the new US strikes as "absolutely necessary" and downplayed Trump's frustration with allies as "isolated cases."
"When you have a ceasefire and Iran is essentially violating the ceasefire, I think it is absolutely important that the US reacts forcefully," Rutte said.
NATO on Tuesday had sought to show that its European members were heeding Trump's calls to spend more on their defense and rely less on the U.S., unveiling a series of arms deals worth at least $50 billion.
Trump, who has harshly criticized NATO during his first and second terms in office, said he was "very disappointed" with the alliance and that the US was not "treated well" during the US-Israeli war against Iran.
"Why are we spending hundreds of billions of dollars and they're not there for us? We've always been there for them," Trump said alongside Erdogan.
Trump has accused European countries of not allowing US forces to use their airspace and bases on their territories during the war.
European officials have said they have largely honored their commitments to American forces, despite not being consulted about a conflict that has disrupted their economies.
