6.0 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan - Over 800 dead, 2,800 injured reported

Over 800 people were killed and more than 2,800 injured in one of the strongest earthquakes in Afghanistan, local authorities announced.

Many villages were destroyed as a result of the natural disaster, which hit the area near the border with Pakistan.

The quake was centered about 27 kilometers northeast of the city of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 struck the same area about 20 minutes later.

This disaster will further increase the pressure on the resources of the South Asian nation, which is already facing a humanitarian crisis, driven by a drastic reduction in aid to the mass return of citizens from neighboring countries.

In the capital Kabul, health authorities said rescue teams were rushing to reach remote villages, in an area with a long history of earthquakes and floods.

This earthquake was the deadliest in the country since June 2023, when magnitude 6.3 tremors killed at least 2,000 people.

Afghanistan is prone to devastating earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Many of the buildings in rural areas are constructed of mud bricks and wood, making them vulnerable to strong tremors.
