Parking in Tirana is becoming a "luxury" / A citizen has to work up to 3 months to pay for parking
Using a car has become a basic need for most people, but with its use come several other costs. In addition to taxes or expenses for repairs and various damages, a separate cost is parking. In the past, when the number of cars was relatively low, parking near settlements was easier and often free. Today, with the increase in the number of cars, parking has become a necessity as much as its use itself.
Based on official prices, the fees vary according to the hours of parking, starting from 200 lek to 800 lek for a typical day. “Scan Intel” has examined public parking fees in the city of Tirana to determine the annual costs that an individual must pay to secure a parking space for their car.
Public parking in Tirana, according to data from the municipality, has different prices according to zones and hours of use for weekdays. Zone A includes the main segments such as Rruga Bardhyl, Rruga “Papa Gjon Pali II”, Rruga “Pjetër Bogdani”, Bulevardi Gjergj Fishta and several other streets. The annual cost for a parking space in this zone ranges from 198,000 to 438,000 lek per year.
Zone B is the most affordable and includes Bajram Curri Boulevard, Kavajës Street, 5 Maji, Kosovareve Street, “Petro Nini Luarasi” Street and other segments. The minimum cost for parking in this zone starts from 79,200 lek and goes up to 102,200 lek per year. Zone C has the lowest prices of the three zones and includes Migjeni Boulevard, Aleksandër Moisiu Street and other streets. The minimum annual cost in this zone starts from 39,000 lek and goes up to 87,000 lek.
Based on this data, it turns out that on average in Zone A a person has to pay about 283,972 lek per year for parking, in Zone B the average cost is about 113,588 lek per year, while in Zone C this figure drops to about 56,794 lek per year. Compared to the average gross salary in Albania, where 1-3 months can be spent just to cover parking fees, it becomes clear that parking is becoming one of the most significant expenses for drivers in the capital. These costs are official by the Municipality of Tirana for public parking, but some residents also use private parking lots which have other informal costs.
