Trump "hits" the Western Balkans with new tariffs/ Serbia and North

United States President Donald Trump has imposed new tariffs on imports from 60 countries, including those in the Balkan region, a move that is expected to significantly affect international trade. It seems that Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro are the most advantaged in terms of the measures imposed. North Macedonia will face a tariff of 33%, while Serbia is the most affected country, with a rate of 37%. Bosnia and Herzegovina will have a tariff of 35%, while Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo will face a lower rate of 10%. These tariffs are intended to protect domestic American production, but are expected to cause reactions from the affected countries, affecting trade and economic relations between the US and the region.

The American president has stated that the highest tariffs will be imposed on those countries with the highest trade surplus.

"Scan Intel" has analyzed the trade relations of the countries of the region with the United States of America to see what the figures say. As for our country, in 2024 imports were estimated at 20 billion lek, while exports at 7 billion lek, with a trade deficit of almost 13 billion lek.

Meanwhile, Serbia, which is even more affected, exported a total of $209.9 million worth of goods to the US and imported $814.4 million worth of goods from the US, resulting in a deficit of $604.5 million. The main products that Serbia exported to the US include vehicle tires and explosive ammunition.

On the other hand, North Macedonia will also be significantly affected by the tariffs. Trade relations between North Macedonia and the United States during 2024 have been stable, with a trade deficit in favor of North Macedonia. According to the data, in 2024, North Macedonia exported goods to the US with a total value of $60.6 million and imported goods from the US worth $173.7 million, resulting in a trade deficit of $113.1 million for North Macedonia.

As for Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 2024, it exported goods worth $70 million to the US and imported goods worth $50 million from the US, resulting in a trade surplus of $20 million.
