The amount of fish caught decreased by 7.9% during 2025/ The sector recorded an increase in the number of licensed entities
According to data from the Institute of Statistics, during 2025, the amount of fish caught from all aquatic categories decreased compared to the previous year. During this year, the total amount of fish caught reached 15.1 thousand tons, marking a decrease of 7.9% compared to the previous year.
During 2025, the process of repopulation of water resources continued, where 1.2 million Rainbow Trout, 2 million Koran and 0.6 million Carp were released into Lake Ohrid. These interventions aim to maintain the balance of aquatic ecosystems and support the development of inland fisheries.
In the structure of fishing catches, aquaculture continues to hold the largest share, accounting for 43.2% of total catches, or about 6.5 thousand tons. It is followed by marine fishing with 29.2% and inland waters with 19.8%, indicating the important role that fish farming has in supplying the market.
By aquatic category, molluscs were the only group to register an increase during 2025, with a 158.2% increase in catches. In contrast, other sectors showed a contraction, with lagoons recording a decrease of 8.2%, aquaculture a decrease of 8.6%, while the most significant decrease was recorded in coastal fishing, with 12.1%.
There were also notable changes according to fish species. Deep-sea shrimp recorded an increase of 15.9%, cod by 13.7% and sardine by 15.2%. Meanwhile, in inland waters, crucian carp recorded an increase of 33.9%, scorta by 23.6%, and carp by 18.2%.
In parallel with production and catches, economic activity in the fishing sector has continued to expand. In 2025, 854 entities were licensed to carry out fishing activities, 21 more entities compared to 2024. The Albanian fleet operates mainly in Geographical Sub-Area 18.
Regarding the distribution of vessels by port, the largest concentration of licensed vessels is in the port of Durrës with 36.3% of the total. It is followed by Vlora with 30.6%, while Lushnje-Fieri and Himara occupy 2.1% and 1.6% respectively.
By vessel type, the majority of the fleet consists of seiners, which account for 73.2% of the total, while bottom trawlers or pelagic vessels account for 23.5%.
