Data from INSTAT show that the number of hospital visits in 2023 marked an increase of 9.6%, compared to the number of visits in the previous year, while the average days of a patient's stay in the hospital were 4.8 days. In absolute value, the total number of visits to the primary service was about 9.2 million. According to this indicator, a person went to the doctor about 3.3 times a year. About 65,000 surgical interventions were performed in public hospital service institutions, or 1.8% more than a year ago. Of the total number of operations performed, approximately half of the operations belong to the surgery service.

In 2023, the number of public and non-public hospitals in the country is 67, of which 43 are public hospitals and 24 are private hospitals. The coverage of public and non-public hospital services is 2.4 hospitals per 100,000 inhabitants. If we compare Albania with other European countries, the data show that the number of hospitals per 100,000 inhabitants varies significantly. Countries such as Germany, France or Lithuania and Latvia lead in this report, while according to official OECD sources, countries such as Italy and Spain have the lowest capacities. According to the data, Germany has one of the most developed health systems in Europe, with a high number of hospitals, but also hospital beds per population.

As for the number of beds, in 2023 a total of 8,838 beds were registered in total, or approximately 3.5 beds per 1,000 inhabitants, or about 360 per 100,000 inhabitants. According to EUROSTAT figures, there are an average of 516 beds per 100,000 inhabitants in the EU. Among the EU countries, Germany registered not only the highest number of hospital beds, but also the second highest number in relation to the size of the population, with 766 beds per 100,000 inhabitants. Meanwhile, on the other hand, the data shows that countries such as Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Ireland recorded the lowest number of hospital beds in relation to their population size, all under 300 beds, i.e. even lower than the country ours.
