Responsible Countries Index/ Where does Albania rank? We are ahead of many

The Responsible Nation Index (RNI) 2026 represents a fundamental shift in how a country’s success is measured globally. For decades, economic indicators, particularly Gross Domestic Product (GDP), have dominated the assessment of national progress. However, the framework of this index, developed through more than three years of research and analysis, argues that a country’s true leadership is not measured solely by economic growth, but by its concrete commitment to its citizens, environmental protection, and responsibility to the global community.

In this new context of evaluation, Albania ranks 18th out of 154 countries in the Responsible Nation Index 2026, marking a very good performance. This result places our country in the group of countries with a high level of responsibility, ahead of a number of countries with more developed economies and greater financial weight in the world.

Albania's ranking signals that policies related to the protection of citizens, social care, environmental protection, and international cooperation have produced concrete results, despite the structural and economic challenges that the country continues to face.

If we focus on the Balkan region, Albania appears as the best-ranked country, topping the regional list in this index. It is followed by Serbia, which holds the 32nd place with 0.53 points. North Macedonia ranks 39th, while Bosnia & Herzegovina is positioned much lower, in 67th place.

At the top of the Index's global rankings is Singapore, which is considered the country with the highest performance in terms of national accountability. It is followed by Switzerland and Denmark, countries that have been known for years for strong institutions, transparency and sustainable social and environmental policies. At the other end of the spectrum, at the bottom of the rankings are South Sudan, Syria and the Central African Republic, countries affected by conflict, instability and a lack of functional institutions.
