Domestic milk "runs out", that powder increases! - In 5 months, 6.5

In the Albanian market, fresh milk, from the farm, with the familiar taste of nature, is being reduced from year to year. Recent statistics show that domestic milk production is running out, while the market is increasingly filled with imported powdered milk.

According to the latest data from the Institute of Statistics, total milk production in Albania has decreased by 2.7%. From 900 thousand 569 tons in 2023, in 2024, Statistics calculates 876 thousand 688 tons, a decline that does not go without consequences.

But amidst this contraction, the same data reports that cows remain the main producers, accounting for almost 85% of milk, while goats and sheep provide 7.7% and 7.4% respectively.

And as farms produce less, customs warehouses are increasingly expecting imported milk powder. In 2024 alone, Albania imported over 757 thousand kilograms of milk powder, with a value reaching 195 million lek.

But what do the figures say about the period January-May of this year?

During this period, 250,393 kilograms of powdered milk were imported, or 70.1 million lek. While in the period January-May last year, 242,494 kilograms of powdered milk were imported, or 64.1 million lek.

But by doing the calculations, in the first five months of 2025, there is an increase in powdered milk of 7,899 kilograms more, or 6.5 million lek more, than the same period last year. The increase is also visible in this year's analysis.

This imbalance between what we produce and what we import sheds light on a sector that is facing major challenges such as declining headcount, rising costs, lack of sustainable subsidies, and young people abandoning agriculture.
