EU-Western Balkans Summit in Tivat - Leaders discuss EU enlargement, regional

The next summit between the EU and the Western Balkans is being held in Tivat, Montenegro. The theme of the summit is "The shared prosperity and stability of the EU and the Western Balkans."

At this summit, the European Union reiterates its full commitment to the perspective of EU membership for the Western Balkans. Leaders assess the progress made in the gradual integration of the Western Balkans into the EU and how to take it further, in particular through the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.

At a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty and economic instability, the leaders discuss enhancing cooperation on foreign policy, security and defence issues. In this area, the aim is to strengthen the Armed Forces of the Western Balkans through the European Peace Mechanism and to increase cooperation through security and defence partnerships and dialogues in building resilience to cyber and other hybrid threats, to combat foreign information manipulation and interference.

The European Union has not admitted a single new state since Croatia joined in 2013, but amid a backdrop of political and economic uncertainty, candidate countries are increasing pressure to open their doors. Montenegro, with a population of just over 600,000, has high hopes of becoming the EU's 28th member by 2028.

Also, this summit comes at a time when Albania has just closed the interim points for the first group of chapters on fundamental issues. Our country aims to close the negotiations for the group of chapters by 2027, while the signing and ratification of the accession treaty could cost Albania another two years until it becomes a full member in 2030.
